Swift's song is a reflection on the coupling imperative that dominates women's lives, and which seems to have the entire force of popular culture behind it. In this course, we will explore the connections between gender and popular culture when it comes to love, sex, and marriage. We'll delve into representations relating to these aspects of living across the many forms of media we consume every day, and which play a part in our understanding of ourselves, our purpose in life, and our place in the world. We'll examine how the search for love as the one optimal life choice for everyone erases the possibility of alternate social arrangements, or the value of different relationship statuses such as being single. We'll also look at the ways in which this legacy of Western patriarchal heteronormativity is refused, resisted, and re-imagined.
