Depression has various causes, including genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, and environmental stressors (Garrett & Hough, 2022). Genetic factors play a big role in predisposing individuals to depression. Research has identified specific genetic variations associated with an increased risk of developing depression. Additionally, hormonal imbalances, such as dysregulation of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine neurotransmitters, have been linked to the onset of depressive symptoms (Garrett & Hough, 2022). Environmental factors, including traumatic events, chronic stress, and socioeconomic conditions, can also contribute to the development of depression (Garrett & Hough, 2022).

Pharmacological treatments for depression primarily aim to restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine and sertraline, are commonly prescribed antidepressants that work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft (Garrett & Hough, 2022). Similarly, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), like venlafaxine, target both serotonin and norepinephrine to alleviate depressive symptoms (Garrett & Hough, 2022). Tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are older classes of antidepressants with different mechanisms of action (Garrett & Hough, 2022).

SSRIs and SNRIs function by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitters, prolonging their presence in the synaptic cleft, facilitating neurotransmission, and acting on the nervous system to modulate mood and emotional responses (Garrett & Hough, 2022). However, they may also lead to side effects such as nausea, insomnia, and sexual dysfunction (Garrett & Hough, 2022). Tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors have similar efficacy but are associated with more pronounced side effects, including anticholinergic effects and dietary restrictions, respectively (Garrett & Hough, 2022).

With a comprehensive analysis of clinical guidelines for the pharmacological treatment of depression, one study reviewed a wide range of antidepressant medications and their efficacy in the treatment of depression (Gabriel et al., 2020). The findings indicated that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, sertraline, and escitalopram were consistently recommended as first-line treatments for depression across various clinical guidelines (Gabriel et al., 2020).
