Debate: Open Source versus Proprietary LMS and the use of Learning Object Repositories (LORs)

This is a discussion; engage in a debate about open source versus proprietary LMSs. Throughout the course, you have been examining different aspects of LMSs. You have become familiar with the financial aspects and the future of learning environments. This discussion asks you to explore the pros and cons of open source and proprietary LMSs and post your position as an advocate of either proprietary or open source systems.

Be prepared to provide research, examples, and personal experiences to support your opinions. One final question: Are open source LMSs really free?

Learning objects are often developed for reuse and stored in LORs. Many of these LORs are open source or open access. One example is MERLOT, a link to which is provided in this unit's Reading. For this part of the discussion, your organization has asked you to explore LORs for use in the organization's educational programs. Investigate a few LORs and respond to the following questions:

  • What types of reusable content might you need to store on either system?
  • What set of requirements would you propose in selecting your LOR?
  • How will your department use the LOR when it is implemented?

Examples of LORs are linked from the Additional Resources in this unit's Reading. You may also want to visit some instructional technology journals or the Library and search for articles on LORs.
