Question: Decide on an appropriate asphalt amount in your mixture by referring to the 635 kg. stability, 0.16 inc flow, 4% air voids and %75 voids

Decide on an appropriate asphalt amount in your mixture by referring to the 635 kg. stability, 0.16 inc flow, 4% air voids and “%75 voids filled by asphalt” criterias.

Asphalt amounts you have to calculate necassary volues in percent by 100 parts of aggregate: 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6

Given:

Unit weight of mixture:2.40

Specific gravity of aggregates: 2.75

Specific gravity of asphalt:1.0

Unit weight of water:1.0

Stability (kg) and flow (inches) values corresponding to the samples:

                                                             Stability Flow

Sample 1 (Asphalt Content: 4%): 550 0.12

Sample 2 (Asphalt Content:4.5%): 600 0.14

Sample 3 (Asphalt Content:5%): 650 0.16

Sample 4 (Asphalt Content: 5.5%): 620 0.17

Sample 5 (Asphalt Content: 6 %): 570 0.20

Hint: What you need to do?

-Fill all the columns of Marshall Test Table (It should be coppied from the reference book, try to fill all columns, which you are able to fill with the available data) You will have only 5 rows.

-Draw 5 graphs in scale, i.e: asphalt content vs stability, asphalt content vs flow with the given data,

asphalt content vs maximum unit weight, asphalt content vs air voids and asphalt content vs % voids filled by asphalt with the calculated data.

-Find corresponding asphalt contents for the criteria values mentioned in the question.

-Calculate the average value of asphalt content from these 4 values and report it as appropriate asphalt content.

-You are going to submit:

a) Calculations for 5 different asphalt content.

 b) Tabulation (Table) of answers and given stability &flow values according to the different asphalt contents,

c) 5 graphs as mentioned above.

d) Your decision for the appropriate asphalt content with the discussion on graphs.
