Design a structure that balances over the base. Please
begin this project by finding a structures to build that look like they may or may not remain standing.
For your design, you will have the following constraints:
- The structure must balance on a base with a footprint of 1.5 in x 1.5 in or less
- The structure must not exceed 10 inches in any of the 3 standard Cartesian coordinates ( We need to make sure we can 3D print the structure).
For this assignment, I would like you to sketch out what your proposed structure looks like from 3 different views ( orthographic views) that are oriented 90 degrees from each other.
I would strongly urge you to use symmetry in your design to remove the need to calculate the centroid position in one direction.
because the centroid will lie on the line of symmetry of the top view, which lies on top of my base! This leaves two more coordinates to be found for the centroid; one in a horizontal direction (I call it the X direction in my work) and one in the vertical direction. We do not need to find the vertical coordinate for this project, but it does serve a purpose of showing how easy or difficult the structure would be to tipping over. What we want is the remaining horizontal coordinate. s long as the remaining horizontal coordinate also remains on top of the base of the structure, it will balance! We will find this horizontal coordinate of the centroid in your second assignment for the project!
