Directions: In this assignment, you are to take on the role of a behavioral researcher and design a study to answer a research question on a general pre-assigned topic (NOTE: You are not carrying out the study or collecting any data, this is purely a thought experiment in research design). The assigned topic: Peer pressure (your research design must address this topic) Your tasks include the following: 1) Devise a hypothesis related to this general topic (Note: a hypothesis is a logical statement (theory) that can be tested through specific research methods). 2) Define the independent and dependent variables in your hypothesis, being sure to operationalize all the terms. 3) Choose a research method by which you could hypothetically test your stated hypothesis. Here you should be as specific as possible in stating why you choose the method you did, defining who your research participants would be (for instance: Middle school students? HS students? Community college students? Adults in the workplace? Some other group? In what area or geographic region? In what place or social institution? Why?), and how you would collect data from the research respondents you define (Will your research take the form of an experiment? Observation? Survey? And why did you prefer this method over others? What will you gain from the chosen method and how is it the best method to test your stated hypothesis?). In addition to the above: 4) Consider and discuss in your assignment whether your research is: 1) ethical (does no harm, adheres to the guidelines we have discussed), 2) valid (answers the question that you are asking by focusing on meaningful and appropriate variables) and 3) reliable (which is to say, the study could easily be replicated by other researchers which shows the results aren't just a 'one off' or the result of luck). Conclude your assignment by 5) discussing any potential shortfalls of the study you have designed (because no study is perfect nor can any single study come up with ALL the answers on a particular subject). Where might your study fall short? What might future studies do to make up for these shortfalls?
