Discussion #8: Making Decisions

Procedure

  1. After reading the chapter and the two MindTools readings, think back to the decisions your group had to make when completing the Short Case Analysis #2.
  2. Use the Vroom-Yetton-Jago Decision Model to make an initial reply post to your group space, and explain the process you feel your group could have used to make the decision (in other words, explain your process for making decisions that led to your final group decision about how to handle the issues presented in the case).

Subject: Quality Improvement Department Leadership Ag the Director of Quality Improvement at Mountains Community Hospital, T wanted to express my deep appreciation for the expenience and expertise vou demonstrated 1n vour role prior to my arrival. I firmly believe that our collaboration within the department will have a lasting positive effect on the entire hospital. To this end. I am proposing that we work together to mend and strengthen our working relationship. By doing so. we can significantly improve the quality of care we provide to our patients. In the attached memorandum, I have outlined several methods to achieve this goal. Getting Started Although we both have extensive expenience in healthcare, particularly 1n quality improvement, we must have a shared understanding of our department's role 1n the hospital's overall vision. Vision Statement The Mountains Community Hospital 1s committed to providing exceptional healthcare services that are measurable and visible. We aim to ensure that our patients feel confident in choosing us for their healthcare needs. Az a member of the quality improvement department, I believe that we have to continuously adhere to the hospital's vision and values to ensure the utmost quality of care 1s provided to our patients. The vision statement outlines why we operate as a hospital. The Mountains Community Hospital exists to provide the trust and care needed to compassionately service the sick It 15 essential that we set this standard as our chief goal within the department. With vour assistance, I am confident that we can guide our department and the entire hospital to provide the best service possible to patients and their families. Our Influence We previously discussed the excellent quality improvements under vour leadership over the past two vears. Y our extensive background, impressive evaluations, and Joint Commission accreditations have earned the respect and lovalty of the entire team. Although the expectations of your interim position did not align with the ideas of executive management, your role in the orgatinzation 1s crucial. | want to repair the worlang relationship with the quality improvement team and gain the trust of the organization. With vour assistance, this 1s entirely possible. My goal 1s to establish a strong rapport with you to build upon the successes of the quality improvement department. As a new leader 1n the orgamization, [ understand that mv leadership style may differ from previous ones. However, | am committed to ensuring that the high-quality care for which Mountains Community Hospital is known continues to excel The Process I understand that improving quality begins with the working relationship between us. Therefore, I suggest that we should hold an initial meeting to discuss all the projects, progress, trials, and errors of the quality improvement department for the past two vears. This way, we can get a clear understanding of where the organization stands and 1dentify areas for improvement. I would also like to gather the 1deas and experiences of the quality improvement team. With vour knowledge of the department, | would appreciate vour involvement in selecting a task force to meet each week to set and progress toward the departmental goals. It would also be beneficial for vou and ] to meet on a weekly basis for a handful of reasons: 1. To continue to establish a rapport of trust and a working relationship with one another 2. To develop methods of continuously improving upon the lovalty of team members, patients, and their families 3. To monitor the progress of the goals as determined in our initial meeting and the task force meetings 4. To ensure that our department 1s adhering to the vision statement and therebyv meeting the needs of patients 5. To continue to set a strong example of quality leadership for team members 6. To develop programs for quality improvement in all departments In addition to our weekly meetings, we will be conducting short departmental meetings every morning to motivate emplovees. These meetings will be led by both of us, demonstrating our collaboration and devotion to our team members. It 1s expected that the team's loyalty wall follow based on the trust that we establish. I hope our working relationship will create a strong vision, continued lovalty, and sincere trust throughout the organization and the community it serves.
