Discussion Prompt:
Introduce yourself and discuss a time where you have faced an ethical dilemma related to design or construction. Examples might include a time that your manager asked to do something you did not think was right or fair. Another example might be when you observed unsafe or risky behavior on the job site, but did not want to get anybody in trouble.
IF you do not have a personal example that you feel comfortable sharing, you may discuss the following scenario:
You are an intern about to finish your summer job, working for a genertit contractor constructing a new office building. The scheduled opening of the building is just days away, and you are responsible for making sure certain items on the punchlist are complete. One of the items on your list is making sure all of the specified doors are inplace.
However, a firerated door darr is on backorder and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. As far as you know, this is the ONLY item remaining in the building that will not meet code. The building inspector is scheduled to arrive onsite this afternoon. Due to the high volume of construction in the city, the inspectors can take up to a week to schedule with, and will mean that the project will not have a Certificate of Occupancy in time for the grandopening see how the City and County of Denver handles Inspections E
Joe, your superintendent ex tells you that he has an extra door onsite that is not fire rated. In addition, he also has an extra "firerated door sticker" in his truck that he could put on the door, so that the inspector will not know the difference. He says you can then switchout the door tomorrow for the real firerated door, so that everything will be correct and safe in time for the "grandopening."
You know that this job is important for the general contractor, and that a lot of negative publicity will result if the building is not ready in time. Furthermore, you know that your superintendent ordered the door in time, but that the supplier was late in their delivery.
