The parasite ameliorates hematin toxicity by sequestering it into crystals called hemozoin. Numerous antimalarial drugs suppress the parasites by blocking hematin crystallization, thereby preserving hematin into its toxic soluble state. (a) The solubility of hematin Ce was measured at five temperatures and is listed in the table below. Use that Kcryst=Ce1 and the van 't Hoff equation to determine the crystallization enthalpy Hcryst0 (b) Use the molecular volume of hematin, =0.8nm3 and the Turnbull relation to determine the value of the surface free energy of hematin crystals.
