Each building is one story tall. The college looks like a quad with four buildings one on each block and features one administration building and three classroom buildings. In the center sits the fifth building, the Student Center. Around the Center are gardens, covered picnic areas, and a small pond with a bridge. Inside the Student Center are the library, the bookstore, the cafeteria, small meeting rooms where students study, an auditorium where they attend concerts and speaker sessions, watch movies, a hall for dances and job fairs, and an activities room with table tennis, foosball, air hockey, billiards, and tables for chatting with friends and relaxing. Currently, the Administration building only has a wired Ethernet network. The classroom buildings have wired connections in the labs and in the faculty podium across all of the classrooms. Students have wireless network access in class, but it is slow and gets congested. There is wireless access in the library, but it is slow or drops connection in the rest of the Student Center and surrounding gardens. Only faculty equipment owned by the school currently connects to the Ethernet network in the classrooms.

Requirements

The schools administration offices want to include secure wireless support. They work with Admissions, Registration, Student Records, the Course Catalog, Human Resources, and Financial Aid.

The faculty teach in most of the buildings on campus, and they need access to sensitive campus data and the Internet. The classroom equipment that the school owns is outdated and will be decommissioned. Faculty will use their personal laptops and mobile devices to access the network to teach, communicate, review student work, and post attendance and grades.

Students need to access the labs and classroom equipment, such as printers, projectors, and servers, and the Internet. The bookstore, library, and student services are all accessible over the Internet.

Visitors and distinguished guests need a public network that is easy to access with high-speed Internet access.

Discussion Requirements

In your initial response, address the following questions:

What would you do as you analyze the network requirements?

Generally speaking, what do you recommend to expand the current network services?

How will you handle the administrators, faculty, and students who need private access and the guests who want public access?

Generally speaking, how do each groups requirements and planned use of the network impact network security?
