A commercial manufacturer of bleach is investigating the viability of using such a process to produce chlorine. Of interest hydrogen gas and NaOH which comes as additional products of the electrochemical reaction have a wide range of industrial usage when produced in large quantities. The facility is to be sited in proximity to a salty lake that has salty of about 14 to 18%. The cut off concentration of saline water is about 25% NaCl by mass of the solution. This would this require huge proportions of water to be evaporated from the feed water before passing it to the electrochemical plant. Another practical concern is the absence of fresh water within the vicinity as saline water percolates the adjoining lands. The design team decided to design a thermomechanical desalination facility which would allow about 45% of fresh water to be removed per unit mass of saline water processed. The Desalination plant has two outputs: a. fresh water with no salt content, b. hypersaline water about 25 to 32 percent salty. At state 1, saline water at room temperature from the dam is pumped to a pressure of 3 bar and heated in a boiler at constant pressure until it reaches a vapour quality of 0.4 (state 3). This is followed by an adiabatic expansion to a pressure of 1 bar (state 4) and then passed through a steam separator. Saturated steam is collected at state 5 for onwards condensation and storage in the freshwater tanks, whilst hypersaline water is collected at port 6 and sent to the chlorine-alkali electrolysis plant. 450 m of saline water is to be treated every 24 hours. i. ii. 111. iv. Sketch a schematic for the desalination plant. Show the saline water processes on a T-s diagram. How much fresh water can be collected per day? What is the concentration of hypersaline water from the desalination plant?
