ENME 3735 Mechanism Design Spring 2024 Gear Design Project A reverted compound gear train is required to have a train value of 40.19 +/-.01 using standard, full depth spur gears. The minimum of number of teeth on any gear is 15, and the diametrical pitch must be between 4 and 8 (All gears must have the same diametrical pitch). Competing designs will be judged on the basis of cost of parts and overall size of the train. The following unit costs will be used to estimate the total cost of parts for your design. Gear blanks Cutting teeth $20.00 +$4.50/inch of pitch circle diameter $3.50 per tooth Shafts (with bearings) Housing $350.00 per shaft $300.00+$50.00/inch of overall length If the tolerance of the gear train is less than +/-.005, then the cost can be calculated at 90% of the above values as a reward for minimizing the tolerance. If gears are undercut due to interference from either manufacturing with a hob or from gear mesh, then the cost must be multiplied by 1.05 for each pair of gears that have undercuts. The required contact ratio must be at least 1.4. Ratio of meshing gear teeth shall not be larger than 10. Be sure to include the following information in the report: (a) (b) A sketch drawn to scale showing the train arrangement for your design. Tooth numbers, diameters and diametrial pitch for each gear. (c) (d) A cost estimate. Calculations demonstrating that the train value design goal has been met by the proposed design (if computer was used to search for solution, this needs to be a hand calculation check of the results obtained by computer). The highest acceptable design cost will receive a 72, the next lower cost will receive a 71, the next lower cost will receive a 70, and so on. If there is a tie both will receive the lower grade. If you do not submit anything on the scheduled time you will receive a 0. If you do not submit an acceptable design you will receive no more than 40 points subject to my discretion. Project will be due on Wednesday, February 7.
