Examine this table, from Kosoy et al. 2007. Payments for environmental services in watersheds: Insights from a comparative study of three cases in Central America (Ecological Economics). Three different sites are examined (Jesus de Otoro, San Pedro del Norte, Heredia), which are in 3 Central American countries. People were asked to forego their regular harvesting (etc.) activities in favor of receiving payment for protecting watershed habitat. They earned PES/area (per year, 4th column in the table below). Compare these profits from protecting ecosystem services, to three measures of foregone income: net on-far profits, “Fair PES”, and Willingness to rent. These all represent foregone (lost) income when the decision is made to conserve. Interpret this table (tell me your interpretation), and comment on the utility of direct payments for conservation.
