In this experiment, you will investigate the interaction of individual gases in our atmosphere with both incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation.
Experiment procedure:
- On the simulation screen, select the Photon Absorption
- In the Atmospheric Gases box, select the button for CH4 to put a methane gas molecule in the middle of the screen.
- Underneath the photon gun, select Infrared Photon. This loads the gun with infrared photons.
- Using the slider on the gun, shoot at least 20 photons at the molecule.
- As a photon is emitted from the gun, it may pass through the molecule, or it may interact with the molecule. When a photon interacts with a molecule, document what you observe happening. If no photons interact with the molecule, document that as well.
- With the gun still loaded with infrared photons, repeat steps 4 and 5 above for the other four gases in the Atmospheric Gases box - CO2, H2O, O2, and N2.
- Underneath the photon gun, select Visible Photon. This loads the gun with visible photons.
- With the gun now loaded with visible photons, repeat steps 4 and 5 above for all five of the gases in the Atmospheric Gases box.
After completing the experiment:
- In the submission template document, under Experiment 4, Observations and Data, enter your observations from step 5 of the experiment for all five gases for each type of photon.
- Based on your observations from the experiment:
- State the evidence that water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) are greenhouse gases.
- Formulate a written discussion that describes how oxygen and nitrogen (the two primary components of Earth's atmosphere) interacted with both incoming solar radiation and outgoing Earth radiation.
- Explain how your discussion in the previous two bullet points connect to the observed paths of both solar radiation photons and infrared photons in experiment 1 for Today's atmosphere.
