Question 1
The syuthesis of acetaldehyde (CH3CHO ) involves the catalytic delyydration of ethanol, which es follows:
C2HOOHCH3CHO+H3
The process involves the blending of fresh feed, which is pure ethmol (CHH(OH), with a rec) de stream consisting of 95 mol % ethanol and 5% acetaldelyde. The combined mikture is then beated and yaporized before entering the reactor at a tempeature of 280C. The grecous products leaving the reactor are cooled to -40 Tlo conderse the acetaldelyde and unrected ethanol. The resulting gas is then directed to a scrubber to eliminte any remiining organic compounds, witile also recovering hydrogea as a by-product. The condensed liquid from the condesser, conhining 45mol96 ethanol, is further processed in a distillation columo. This column produces a distilate that coatains 97 mol %6 acetaldelyde, while the bottons product constitules be recycled strem that is blended with fresh feed for the subsequeat steps of the process.
(a) Illustrate and label a Block Flow Diggram (BFD) stream for the catalytic reaction of acetaldehyde.
(10 Marls)
(b) Bused on the above BFD and using coned ISA symbology, prepure a Process Flow Diagram (PFD) for this complete process.
