Figure 2(on the next page) is the P&ID for the equipment used in the bulk
pharmaceutical production of Compound X. Compound X is formed via the
controlled addition of Reactant B (from vessel F2) into a solution of Reactant A in
vessel F3; vessel F3 is continuously agitated during the addition. Since the reaction
is dangerously exothermic, the addition rate of Reactant B is controlled by the orifice
plate, OP1, such that the temperature in vessel F3 is maintained between 55 and 60
C. To ensure the safe operation of the process, the rate of addition of B is controlled
at 2 kg min-1
(via OP1) and the temperature in F3 is kept above 40C.
Firstly, construct an appropriate HAZOP template.
(2 marks)
Then perform a HAZOP on the controlled addition of Reactant B from F2 to F3 as
follows:
- develop two valid scenarios for NO FLOW
- develop one valid scenario for MORE FLOW
- develop one valid scenario for NO STIRRING
- develop one valid scenario for ELSEWHERE FLOW
