A file identifying your group number and team mates for Group Case #2 has been posted on Carmen > Cases > Group Case #2. o YOU MAY NOT CHANGE GROUPS without express permission from your instructor. If you unilaterally decide to work with a group other than the one assigned to you by your instructor, you will receive 0 points for this case. o All members of the group are responsible for communicating with each other to arrange meetings. Be professional and considerate and respond to your team mates regarding group meetings, even if the case isn't your immediate priority. o Every member of the group is expected/required to contribute to the solution of all three problems in the case. Refusal to contribute to your team's project will result in a reduced score, potentially 0 points. o Mrs. Schroeder will only mediate group disputes as a last resort. Effective team work requires that the members treat each other with respect and in an inclusive manner. It also requires that the team members make every effort to resolve conflicts internally. You will be signing the following honor pledge on the case cover page. Be sure it is true. As a member of the Ohio State University, I will not participate in or tolerate academic dishonesty. By signing below, I attest that we have performed this analysis without sharing information about this assignment with individuals outside of our group. I understand that any violation of this statement by handing in any portion of another individual's or group's work as our own constitutes academic misconduct. I understand that giving any portion of my group's work to another individual or group constitutes academic misconduct. Your case report must be formatted accordingly: o It must have page numbers. Locate the numbers in the lower right-hand corner, with the cover page as page 0. The \"0\" does not have to be visible on the cover page. o All required information on the cover page must be typed, except signatures. o Each member must sign the document. A missing signature results in a deduction for that individual. o Group member names must be listed alphabetically (from A to Z) in all places. o Secure all pages of the report together with a staple in the upper, left-hand corner. Do this before coming to class. Instructors do not carry staplers with them. o Begin your write-up of each problem on a new page. o Tables, graphs, exhibits should never wrap across pages. o Use appropriate labeling and annotation. All graphs must be labeled below the image with \"Figure #: title.\" All tables and exhibits must be labeled above with \"Table #: title.\" 1 Business Management 2320 Group Case #2 Every student must submit the peer evaluation of the team members. o Every student has the right to complete his/her peer evaluations confidentially. o Each student's evaluations should accurately reflect the effort given and contribution made by each member of the group. If there is evidence that your evaluation of any of your team members in not accurate, you will be penalized 5 points. o No student's evaluations should be influenced by the opinions of other team members. o Type all required information in the peer evaluation. o Do not staple peer evaluation forms to the case. Peer evaluations and cases are processed/graded by different people. o Failure to submit a peer evaluation results in a 5 point deduction for the individual. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Improve problem solving and communication skills. Improve understanding of data analysis, modeling, and statistical inference through application to real business problems. Improve literacy of statistical computing software and the output. Experiential learning by applying course content to real world business problems. RUBRIC Formatting/Presentation = 4 points For Problems 1 and 2, apply the \"Plan - Do - Report\" approach. Follow the method used in the Guided Examples in the Sharpe, et al text book for formatting your report for this problem. These examples give complete explanations of the thought process and necessary components for every methodology introduced in the course. Follow the direction given in the example(s) provided for the problem types included in this assignment. PLAN Problem 1 (12 points) Problem 2 (15 points) 5 points 7 points Briefly summarize the objective of the analysis, important variable(s), data collection and characteristics. Formulate hypotheses if relevant Identify analysis type State and check required data conditions. Include all graphs and numerical summary used in this process. 2 Business Management 2320 Group Case #2 DO 3 points 3 points 4 points 5 points Complete all relevant analysis utilizing the pre-programmed statistical software (StatCrunch or Excel Data Analysis Add-In). The data required are saved in the Excel file titled \"Case #2 Data\" posted on Carmen > Modules > Cases > Group Case #2. Use the Excel Data Analysis Add-In or StatCrunch to complete as much of your work as possible. Any manual calculation included must be processed with the Equation Editor. REPORT Use the Memo format as shown in the Guided Examples. Connect the statistical results with your conclusions. Write a brief but comprehensive summary of your findings and conclusion. If warranted, make recommendations. For Problem 3 (24 points), answer all questions in the order given. Include all graphical and numerical information generated with StatCrunch and/or Excel Data Analysis. Use a 5% significance level throughout. Problem 1 In the Case #2 data file posted on Carmen you will find information as reported by you and your peers regarding the Business specializations chosen (worksheet titled \"1. Specialization\"). Suppose you are working for a consulting firm hired to help formulate recruiting plans for potential future FCOB students. Analyze the given data to determine if the specialization chosen is related to gender. If a goal is to try to achieve better balance in the numbers of males and females in all specialization, what suggestions to you have for recruit ing students? Specifically, if there is an inequity, which specializations need to adjust, and how? Problem 2 Are sales of a product affected by the shelf placement in stores? If so, how do sales differ with shelf placement? In an attempt to answer these questions, 125 stores from a major chain of supermarket with many stores throughout much of the United States were randomly selected for an experiment. Each store stocks cereal in a similar location in the store on five-shelf displays. In the experiment, the shelf placement of a particular brand of cereal, which we'll call Brand X, was randomly assigned to the stores, with 25 stores placing Brand X on the lowest shelf, 25 stores placing Brand X on the next-to-lowest shelf, etc. Sales of Brand X were recorded for a specific two-week period. The data can be found in the worksheet titled \"2. Cereal Sales\" in the Case #2 data file posted on Carmen. Perform the appropriate analysis to answer the questions posed in the opening sentence. 3 Business Management 2320 Group Case #2 Problem 3 When one company buys another company, it is not unusual that some workers are terminated. The severance benefits offered to the laid-off workers are often the subject of dispute. Suppose ABC, Inc. recently bought the XYZ, Co. and subsequently terminated 20 of its employees. As part of the buyout agreement, it was promised that the severance packages offered to the former XYZ, Co. employees would be equivalent to those offered to ABC, Inc. employees who had been terminated in the past year. Thirty-six-year-old Rita Book, an employee of XYZ, Co. for the past 10 years, earning $50,000 per year, was one of those let go. Her severance package included an offer of 7 weeks' severance pay. Rita complained that this offer was too low. She alleged that either gender discrimination had occurred or ABC, Inc. offered less to XYZ, Co.'s employees when they were laid off, in contravention of the buyout agreement. You, as a statistician, have been called in to help settle the dispute. You are told that gender discrimination never occurs in ABC, Inc. and that severance is determined by three factors: age, length of service with the company, and pay. To determine whether or not Brenda's offer is consistent with severance offers made to ABC, Inc. employees, a random sample of 50 ABC, Inc. ex-employees was taken. For each ex-employee in the sample, values for the following variables were recorded: Number of weeks of severance pay = Weeks SP Age of employee (as of their last birthday) = Age Number of years with the company = Years Annual pay (in thousands of dollars) = Pay Gender (M = Male, F = Female) Complete the following requirements in the order given. a) (3 points) Obtain all relevant correlations and scatter plots to investigate the relationships between the variables. Include these items in your assignment submission. Briefly discuss (2 - 5 sentences) your observations. b) (12 points) Try several models (at least 4). Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the various models and select the model that provides the best description of the relationship between Weeks SP and the other variables. Out of respect for our trees, you will conserve paper by summarizing all models that you fit in the following table (add rows as needed; one row per model) and only include the full computer results for the model you selected as best. Your choice of \"best\" model must include verification of the required data conditions. Include the supporting graphs for your \"best\" model. Model F (P-value) R2 R2(adj) Model s Notable deficiencies* Weeks SP with list of predictors included *Notable deficiencies might include, but are not limited to, the following: collinearity between predictors, statistically insignificant predictor(s), data condition(s) not satisfied. c) (3 points) A brief (1 - 3 sentences) discussion the \"goodness-of-fit\" of the \"best\" model. d) (2 points) The 95% interval in which the severance pay offer for anyone with Rita's characteristics (age, number of years with the company, and annual pay) should fall, as determined by using your \"best\" model. Give this careful consideration. Which interval is appropriate, the interval that estimates the conditional mean or the interval that predicts an individual outcome. e) (3 points) Briefly (1 - 2 sentences) discuss whether Rita has a legitimate complaint. f) (1 point) Comment on ABC, Inc.'s claim that severance pay is determined by Age, Years, and Pay. 4
