The issues in the questions are addressed in Rebecca Skloot's book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Additional helpful sources are listed in Canvas module "Research Ethics Information." [For background information on the history of research ethics in the US and around the world, you will need to access and review the materials in this module. The articles provide some information about the historical background regarding the developments of 'codes of ethics,' as well as brief descriptions of experiments conducted on unwitting, vulnerable populations. The videos present information on a variety of research experiments conducted by individual researchers and US governmental agencies including the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), DoD (Department of Defense), and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control)).      Questions/Issues to Address 
1)  After reading the book, what are some of the biggest issues raised? Discuss at least 3 main themes that stood out to you. [This question should serve as the introduction in your paper and help frame the issues to be addressed in it.]  
2) Using the Rennison and Hart text, along with the video and other resources in the "Research Ethics Module," and the Skloot book to an extent, provide a brief overview of the historical background of the evolution of research ethics in the scientific and medical fields. Be sure to use an example or two of unethical experimentations and discuss at least one of the main codes of ethics (e.g., Nuremberg Code, Belmont Report, etc.) that were implemented in order to address these issues. What is the current status of "informed consent" that researchers are required to follow and adhere to?  
3) Henrietta signed a consent form that said, "I hereby give consent to the staff of The Johns Hopkins Hospital to perform any operative procedures and under any anesthetic either local or general that they may deem necessary in the proper surgical care and treatment of: ________" (page 31).  
4) Based on this statement, do you believe TeLinde and Gey had the right to obtain a sample from her cervix to use in their research? 
5) What information would they have had to give her for Henrietta to have given informed consent? 
6) Do you think Henrietta would have given explicit consent to have a tissue sample used in medical research if she had been given all the information? 
7) Further, think about John Moore and the patent that had been filed without his consent on his cells called "Mo" (page 201). What are your thoughts on the Supreme Court of California ruling that states when tissues are removed from your body, with or without your consent, any claim you might have had to owning them vanishes?

* On page 130, there is a discussion on testing on humans by a doctor injecting people with cancer cells. Some were prisoners, some ob/gyn patients, etc. Consider the issue of dealing with vulnerable populations in research. What were your reactions to the doctor's attitude? Is this problematic? Do you think the good that might come of this research, or of 
Henrietta's cells, make up for the manner in which they were treated by the doctors and researchers? Why or why not?
