Refrigeration had not yet been invented. Ice was simply not available-until a Massachusetts businessman named Frederic Tudor found a way.
Frederic Tudor was born in Boston in 1783. His family believed in education and thought college was de rigueur. All three of his brothers went to Harvard College. Frederic thought college was for loafers. He believed in action. At the age of thirteen, he left school to go into business.
When Frederic was seventeen, his brother John became very ill. His doctor told John to spend time in a warm climate, and Frederic went with him to Havana, Cuba. The cure was unsuccessful, but the journey
