The spreadsheet data includes data from one professor for one academic year. Responses could come from the fall semester (1) or the spring semester (2). The professor also kept track of which classes began early in the morning (numbered as 1; indicating starting at or before 9:30am) and those which came later in the day (numbered as 0 and indicating start times after 9:30). Each row of the table represents one student and each column one measure on which students were asked to rate their professor. A low score indicates a student disagrees with a statement and a high value indicates a student more strongly agrees with a statement. The statements are abbreviated:

  • It is my personal teaching experience that more students come to class sleepy/groggy in the early morning compared to later in the day. I might suspect it is more difficult to engage students in these early morning classes. First I need to identify which variables might be used to evaluate if students are feeling engaged. I might feel "The professor is effective in holding students' attention in class" (Hold_att) and "The professor encourages students to participate in class discussion" (Part_in_Dis) might be two such measures.
  • State in terms of a hypothesis test, with H0H0 and HAHA, what we might test if we think the professor struggled to engage students in early morning classes.
  • Conduct the appropriate hypothesis tests for the previous two bullet points and display the results.
