For this in-class assignment, you may work in groups of 2 - 3 people (or alone if you prefer). Re-watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZoKElBwKCs to help you with the assignment. Question: Pick one painting from chapter 22 and another from chapter 23 and talk to your partner(s) as if you were walking in a museum. You are basically making observations of what you are seeing (literally). You do not need to research; it is just what you are observing that is important. Use the video and the vocabulary words to help you. After you have conversed, write in 1 - 2 pages what your reflections on the two paintings were. This is done all in your own words. Some steps which will help: - Pick one painting from chapter 22 and one from chapter 23. - Start with one, and then do the same with the second one. - Take in full view of the painting - move your eye around all of it. - Pick a starting point that catches your eye. - Now by observing, describe why your eye has moved there and try to figure it out. (Perhaps it is the colour? Or the shape? Or a recognizable feature? - Look at it closer. How does the paint sit on top of each other? - What are some compositional choices made by the artist? Are the figures in the middle? Is there a structure? If so, what is it? Are there humans? If so, here are they? How are they interacting with each other? How are they interacting with other structures? - Talk about the colours, talk about the shapes. - What is the level of detail? Are the details controlled? - How is light being used? - Is there a narrative you can follow? - How do these paintings compare to previous works we have seen? - Look at the artists, title and date - what does this tell you about the paintings? - Ultimately, what have you learnt or gathered about the painting now that you have taken the time to look at it. It in detail
