This can be done by hanging a weight on a partly peeled length while supporting the roll so that it can freely rotate (e.g. hang it on a pencil). Increase the load to the value M that just causes rapid peeling (i.e. fast fracture). Measure and record the value of M. Also measure the width, w, of the adhesive. (a) As a first approximation, assume that the quantity of the strain energy is small compared to the work done by M and can be neglected. Formulate and calculate the critical strain energy release rate, Gc, for the adhesive. (b) Now assume that we take a more thorough approach and also consider the strain energy in the elastic tape.
