The route to the ground level is a single, one-person canister that acts like an elevator that transports an individual miner, one-by-one, to the top through a special tunnel that was bored into the side of the mountain. As they are transporting the next of the remaining miners, there is a collapse in the mine below leaving 29 miners trapped and one miner trapped in the transport capsule, which has now stopped working and has become blocked from above. In an attempt to reach the trapped miners below, the mining company has tried drilling new evacuation shafts on either side of the mountain. These shafts have collapsed in the process, and engineers have determined that if another shaft is attempted, the mine will totally collapse, and all miners will die. It is further determined that the only way to reach the 29 trapped miners below
