gas stream containing a valuable hydrocarbon (Molecular weight=44) is to be scrubbed with
a non-volatile oil (Molecular weight=300) in a tower packed with 1-inch Raschig rings. The
entering gas contains 20 mol% hydrocarbon and 95% of this hydrocarbon is to be recovered.
The inert gas molecular weight is 29. The gas stream enters the column at 5000 kg/m2
.hr and
hydrocarbon free oil enters the top of the column at 10000 kg/m2
.hr.
(i) Calculate the exit gas and exit liquid mole fractions. (ii) With a simple sketch,
precisely show various streams and their corresponding values. (iii) Develop a
mathematical expression of the operating line (on inert basis).(iv) If the equilibrium
data is given, can the Colburns analytical method be used to find NTU or NOG for the
aforementioned numerical? Justify.
