Gregory is a UX researcher gathering primary formative research data on a language translation application prototype. He invites Bernard, an adult male from the design team$$s target audience, to Hypothetica$$s lab.

When Bernard arrives, Gregory briefs him and reads the consent form aloud. He explains that the purpose of the study is to test the prototype$$not to test or evaluate Bernard's abilities. Gregory requests that Bernard narrate his thought process while completing the given task list, so that he can follow along with his decision$-$making. Gregory informs Bernard that the session will be recorded both via camera and notes that he himself will take. He also assures Bernard that all of the data collected will be private and only used for research in this application. Gregory concludes by asking if Bernard has any questions about the form or the study.

After Bernard signs the consent form, Gregory hands over a task list for Bernard to complete and starts the recording. Seated in front of the prototype Bernard starts completing tasks and talks about his impressions so far. At several points during testing Bernard stops interacting with the prototype and silently seems to be thinking intently on how to proceed. During these moments, Gregory asks what Bernard is thinking about. He takes meticulous notes during these points and then if Bernard is stuck, Gregory helps him to move forward to the next task.

After the task list is complete, Gregory casually asks Bernard what he thinks were the best and worst parts of his experience. And what changes he would make.
