- Forces of Change
Discuss digitalisation and the forces of changes impacting your industry or sector,
including your organisation. Forces of change include changing customer or market requirements, changes within the industry environment (e.g, Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT)). Reflect on your chosen organisation and its challenges in responding to these forces of change .
Digitalisation can be interpreted differently because different companies and industries have different levels of digital maturity and different values, stakeholders, and visions Westerman, Bonnet and McAfee, (2014). However, the common theme is using technology to improve operations and strategic business differentiation or improve enterprise performance or reach dramaticallyNahrkhalaji et al., (2018). The driving forces of change in the non-profit sector are societal changes Kaivo-oja et al., (2017), the global economy Bauer et al., (2015) and technology. Change is also forced by decreasing product life cycles, changing consumer expectations and needs, and markets becoming more heterogeneous over time Karre et al., (2017). Huntlee Academy (HAL) is a non-profit (NFP), and the NFP sector has been slow to embrace digital technology Woodman and Spelhaug, (2017). (HAL) lacks digital maturity as discussed by both Kristensen et al., (2018); Slack and Brandon- Jones, (2019) and lag in adopting new technologies. (HAL) lacks the spending capacity and financial might, and in an underfunded organisation, resource optimisation is critical. Existing technologies require updating, and a lack of funds means inadequate IT infrastructure and support, with a high percentage of manual practices still in use. (HAL) will face a number of challenges as technology platforms and big data analytics emerge, causing profound changes in organisational structures, strategy, and management processes Bonnet and Westerman (2020); Hill & Hill (2017); Machadoa et al., (2019).These difficulties can be organisational, strategic, cultural, or managerial. The fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 Olsen & Tomlin, (2020), is rapidly becoming the most disruptive and transformative shift in history. Industry 4.0 presents enormous opportunities to transform the social sector; the ability to implement a well-thought-out digital strategy that connects people, processes, and technology can accelerate social impact and help HAL achieve its mission. HAL could benefit from taking a more holistic view of Industry 4.0 Cotteleer, Mahto and Sniderman, 2017 discuss how organisations can bring together the technologies and harness them to drive operational growth. The biggest challenges facing HAL are budgetary concerns, staffing capacity and capabilities, refreshing IT infrastructure.
