Have you ever been in a workplace where 2 people with different years of seniority where doing the same task, but being paid a different wage? Or been in a workplace where a person hiring in has started at the same wage (or higher) wage you have? It may seem unfair and have motivational or employee retention issues. Maybe the economy had changed and higher wages were required to attract employees, maybe the new hire has more education, training, or experience and certifications? Or not? Do current employees get their pay re-evaluated when new hires begin? Or does new hire starting wage depend on what current employees already are paid? Or are industry and local/geographic benchmarks compared? You don't have to answer all of the questions above; however hopefully they communicate the importance of a compensation strategy for employees.
