Robotics Project Description Aerial and Ground Robot Collaboration in Search and Rescue Missions There is a growing interest in the use of autonomous robot systems to assist people in search and rescue operations in dangerous, unknown and harsh environments. Senior design project teams are challenged to develop a synchronous ground-air robot collaboration system, in which an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a mobile robot will work in collaboratively in a search and rescue mission without using global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Specifically; the UAV will use simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches to extract a map of the unknown area, and image processing techniques will be employed to detect the victims as well as the position of the mobile robot. the mobile robot will receive the goal position in the created map and will execute a path planning algorithm for reaching the goal positions. The mobile robot will also perform visual human body detection using camera data. Project groups can be formed up to 8 students, with a maximum of 4 students working in the aerial robot part and a maximum of 4 students in the mobile robot part of the project. Students are expected to provide a conceptual design to achieve the given tasks in the Fall semester. In the Spring semester, project groups are expected to implement the robot collaboration scheme and test it in real-life experiments.
