Lisa Martino, RD, walks into her office on Monday morning an hour earlier than usual. She has anumber of things on her "To Do" list as director of Nutrition and Food Services of the Pleasant Valley SchoolDistrict, primarily finishing the month's federal reimbursement report that is due by the end of the day; she wants to get an early start.

Murphy's Law seems to apply as her day unfolds:

  • Dropping her things on her desk, Lisa notices the message light blinking. It is from Rose Johnson, the manager at the middle school, calling to say the refrigerator at the high school died over the weekend. The temperature is up to 50 F, and she wants to know if she can use the hamburger for today's spaghettiand meatball lunch. If not, she needs something to serve.
  • The phone rings, and it is Anna, one of the cooks at the Richardson Elementary School. Her kidsare sick with the flu, and she can't come in today.
  • Lisa calls Martha Green, manager of the high school, to send a asubstitute to the RichardsonSchool, Martha says she could send Angelica, but Lisa better talks to her first. She came in this morning very upset about last Friday's paycheck, claiming that she was to get a higher rate when subbing for Gloria, the cook.
  • Mrs. Fischer calls. Her son Joshua attends Crocker Elementary School. He has food allergies, loves spaghetti and meatballs, and wants to know if there are eggs in the meatball recipe.
  • Mrs. Wilkinson, a teacher at the high school, dashes in. She only has a minute as she has to get toclass and was just quickly dropping off something in the administration building. She would like a refundfrom the vending machine. She lost her money twice trying to get bottled water. She has the company's number posted on the machine to call for refunds, but thought it would just be easier to pick up the moneyshe is owed.
  • Joe Brown, sales rep for Tasty and Healthy Snacks, calls to say he will be in the area around 10:00this morning before Lisa's day gets too busy. He has a new vending item, a taco hot pocket he thinks shewill love. She could just take a quick look at the nutrient analysis, and he'll be happy to meet her at one ofthe schools this morning where the cook can quickly make a few samples for tasting.
  • The phone rings again. Martha calls to say that the POS system is not working and the first lunchbegins at 10:40 AM. Will Lisa call the company and have them come immediately? Martha adds that she doesn't want to get in trouble again with the state reviewer who accused them during the last SM review ofnot carefully checking students through the line.

Lisa turns next to her e-mail. She has the following messages in her inbox:

  • The state nutrition association asks her to serve on the nutrition advisory committee. Thecommittee needs to meet each month, and would she please get back to them first thing thismorning with her answer?
  • Joe Johnson wants to know when her report on establishing standards for vending will becompleted, and could they possibly talk about this today?
  • Mrs. Long introduces herself as avery caring parent who homeschools her child. She would like to set up an appointment for her daughter Zoe to meetwith Lisa and discuss the different kinds ofvegetarianism.
  • As she finally begins to open her mail, a letter from the internship director thanks her for herwillingness to take a dietetic intern next semester and asks if they could schedule an appointment to talkabout accommodating the intern's hearing impairment. The college would be happy to have Lisa enroll in asign language course tuition-free, which begins next week.
