here is operations management question

Capacity Optimization for Shouldice Hospital

(A) Assume that there are 90 beds and patients stay for an average of 3 days. Patients are admitted Sunday-Thursday. Surgery is always performed on the patient next day upon arrival. Surgery is done only Mon-Fri, but beds are available for recovery through the weekend. Shouldice is currently scheduling level admittance as given below for a total weekly throughput of 150 patients (90*5/3 = 150). Note that the first 3 days in the following table are to wet the beds (pun intended) i.e. to bring the system into steady state condition. The next 7 days, Wed-Tue in bold, in the real week. This means that your admittance on Sun-Tue in the first week must match with your admittance on the same days of the following week, and every subsequent week.

Ignoring other resources in the hospital (e.g. surgeons availability), design an admittance policy that will maximize the weekly throughput for the beds. You may use Excel Solver, any computer program, algebra, or simply trial and error.

(B) Assume that Shouldice currently has 12 surgeons on any given day who can perform a total of 36 surgeries a day (3/day for each surgeon). Redesign your admittance policy that will not allow more than 36 admissions a day, so as to maximize the weekly throughput.

(C1) Consider the expansion option of Saturday operation with 90 beds, assuming that the necessary staffing would be made available. Calculate the weekly throughput of the beds in line with the question (A) above. Do you agree with the expectation that the bed capacity (in terms of weekly throughput) would indeed increase by 20%?

(C2) Repeat (C1) above in line with question (B) when surgeries are limited to 36 per day because of surgeon limitations.
