By now you should have a focused inquiry, a sense of the conversations around it, and your own research into it. Now you're going to create a rhetorical genre of some kindacademic or non-academicthat communicates your findings. This will involve doing some research into genre conventions.

How To Do This

Think about your inquiry and who would benefit from the understanding you've gained during your research.

Think also about the disciplines and non-academic communities in which the inquiry exists.

Think about which rhetorical genres might make sense for you to compose based on these three things (the knowledge itself, the audience, and the discipline(s)).

Does the discipline itself have a genre that you could compose a version of? For example, if the discipline is botany, which genres do botanists use to communicate their findings?

Is there a genre that might speak to your intended audience? For example, if gardeners might benefit from your research, which genres might they read?

After you've considered the questions above, think about what you would be able to compose in the time available.

Once you have a genre in mind, study the conventions of the genre. Make notes on these for your Genre Analysis form.

What communication need does the genre attempt to fulfill?

Who usually composes it?

Who is the audience?

What are the expected features of the genre that make it recognizable?

It may be helpful to find one or two examples of the genre that you can refer to.
