The company was founded in 1940 and is based in Oak Brook, Illinois. McDonald's Corporation is #110/500 in the Fortune.com. The company operates and franchises McDonald's restaurants in the United States, Europe, the Asia/Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Canada, and Latin America. The company's restaurants offer various food products, soft drinks, coffee, and other beverages. McDONALD'S CORPORATION CASE STUDY (GROUP 1) 2 As of December 31, 2014, it operated 36,258 restaurants, including 29,544 franchised restaurants comprising 20,774 franchised to conventional franchisees, 5,228 licensed to developmental licensees, and 3,542 licensed to foreign affiliates; and 6,714 company-operated restaurants. The current strategy employed by management is to expand into high growth markets across Asia and Europe in addition to reimaging the franchise into established international markets across Europe, Asia, and Latin America (McDonald's-Home, n.d.). The company intends to invest $2 billion in capital expenditures with half of that used to open new restaurants (Annual, 2015). The goal is for half of those new establishments to be affiliated and developmental licensee market franchises. These types of franchises call for limited capital investment and increase available cash flows based upon royalties, percentage of sales, and earnings of unconsolidated affiliates. The challenge for McDonald's corporation in foreign markets is volatility in the currency exchange rates and establishing regional supply networks to minimize the cost in US exports. Managing these two hurdles can potentially reverse the 2014 Annual Report decline of 1% in global sales, 3.6% in guest counts, and 2% in consolidated revenues (2015). Cursory Analysis The current McDonald's CEO is working very hard at changing the outward image of the company. The focus is to make the current customers you have happy by increasing menu choices, speed of service, and providing a more open and candid relationship with the general public (Maidment, 2015). This rebranding not only applies to new franchises mentioned earlier, McDONALD'S CORPORATION CASE STUDY (GROUP 1) 3 but also to existing restaurants. This strategy will require capital investment for brick and mortar face lifts, individual ordering kiosks, and as limited delivery services are applied to stores across the globe. The key is to increase customer count and sales to avoid additional debt financing. As can be seen in the Morningstar report on McDonald's, debt to equity ratios have increased since 2012 from 48%/52% to a current ratio of 68%/32% (2016). This is supported by the debt to equity ratios provided below that show McDonald's ratio above the industry and sector averages. The largest concern for the franchise is the drop in revenue growth. The growth rate ratios below demonstrate an over 5% drop last quarter and an over 8% drop in the last 12 months in revenue growth. The strategy internationally must improve currency hedging efforts to counter the $1.9 billion lost in foreign currency adjustments based on last year's Annual Report (2015, p.30). The overall analysis and evaluation of the franchise will work to determine which emerging international markets, if any, are best suited to meet management's intent of increasing revenue with minimal capital investment.
