How can I make this paragraph sound better? Is is too long or and suggestions?
Here is the scenario and situation:
Assume you are an employee working in the Amazon warehouse, and you pack orders and categorize them into small, medium, and large batches. You are considered a packer. You have experience packing all sizes and have been with the organization for two years. You are considered one of their best employees, you have a solid reputation for being a hard worker, and all of your orders are packed correctly. You have also been busy; you recently completed Amazon's management training program, and you have completed your BABA degree at the Forbes School of Business and Technology at the University of the Arizona Global Campus.
Congratulations: You have just been promoted to manager. You will be relocated to a new plant that is two hours away that employs 100 employees. You will oversee a team of 10 supervisors and 90 packers and will now oversee the entire warehouse operation. How will you work to use and apply the five functions of management?
Now let's apply the five functions. In your paper, include the following sections:
- Planning: Examine the specific areas you will choose to manage that fall under the planning function.
- For example, what might be some of the things you will plan to do and implement to build an effective team and culture? People are the most important resource in any business, what do you plan to do to build a positive team culture? What processes and systems do you plan to use?
Planning
Planning is the 1st step in the five step management functions. I must make sure the objectioves lign up with Amazon's four principles which are customer obession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellenve, and long-term thinking (Who We Are | Amazon, n.d.)." Planning for managing the distribution center will involve several steps to ensure a prosperous future. Below are factors for each of the planning process and how they relate to the distubiton process.
- Hours of operations. Understand the order intake, how often are orders sent in to our distribution center and what is the forecast by day. This will allow me to position eachemployee and supervisor on the correct schedules to be most efficient.
- Develop time studies for each process and make sure they align with the pick and
pack times of the warehouse. Having too many employees on a shift with minimal
orders decreases efficiency and increases overall operator costs.
- Set min/max levels based on past ordering trends and upcoming forecast to ensure
products are available when ordered.
- Preform daily cycle counts of stock to ensure inventory levels are accurate and maintained.
- Plan daily department meetings given by supervisors to communicate key performance indicators and allow for feedback.
- Plan a continuous improvement program to allow employees to submit ideas for
process and safety improvements to be reviewed weekly. This will empower the workforce and create a since of ownership and worth.
- Plan on safety walkthroughs to ensure no ergonomic issues are present for employees.
- Plan on departmental cookouts for those areas exceeding their metrics consistently.
- Succession plan for top employees for supervisors roles in the future. These are just a few planning functions necessary to create a positive work environment with measured results in safety, quality, productivity and continuous improvement. Other factors could be involved however procurement is handled at the corporate level and not the warehouse level. Planning is involved in everyday responsibilities, without a plan your business, area, or task would suffer from a lack of. Planning forms the basis for an effective and sustainable control system. Goals should be difficult but attainable, measurable, clearly stated and flexible are the basis of the goal setting literature established by Lock, Shaw, Saarim & Lathanm (1981).
