How does the below relate to this day in age ? (Constance)
People are interested in what is referred to as the Black-White Achievement Gap in education. Based on extensive research, the gap seems to be there; the gap IS there, but propose that the gap is a misnomer and is being perpetuated by most of the research being done. Fifty-eight years ago, the first report was published by James S. Coleman, the report, known as the Coleman Report, was a surprise to many.
Hill (2016) states the report "unveiledtwo major surprises. First, it revealed an enormous achievement gap between America's black and white students. Second, it suggested that the gap arose largely from differences among families" (para. 2.) Dr. Coleman had a background in psychology and sociology, was experienced with large-scale quantitative data, and had published a book on teen social issues. Coleman was selected by Congress when they commissioned the Equality of Educational Opportunity Study as part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Coleman's report has served as the foundation of much of the data collection and reporting of the achievement gap problem.
Most of the strategies and methodologies of research have been used in analyzing the achievement gap problem; observation, participation, experiments, interviews, focus groups, surveys, secondary data analysis, analysis of historical data, and mixed methods. These same strategies are appropriate in looking for solutions to societal problems. It starts with an identified problem, a problem statement, a literature search, an analysis of available data, and then selecting strategies, designing the study/research to examine and hopefully solve or at least create some solutions.
