How would you identify the components of a mixture of alcohols using chromatography? (5 marks)

(b) Substances A and B have retention times of 16.4 min and 17.63 min, respectively, on a 30 cm column. An unretained species passes through the column in 1.30 min. Peak widths are 1.0 and 1.3 min, while peak widths at half height are 0.4 and 0.6 min. Calculate column resolution. (5 marks)

(c) The absorbance of a sample in a 1.0 cm cuvette is 0.544. If the concentration is 1.4 x 10-2 M, what is the molar absorptivity for this species? (5 marks)

(d) The quantity of iron in a number of water samples was determined by AAS spectrophotometry. A series of calibration standards with varying concentrations of iron were analysed. Three samples of water were also analysed, and the observed absorbances are shown in the table below. Use these data to determine the levels of iron in the two samples. (20 marks) (Total 35 marks)
