Once you have read the case carefully, review the information below and consider the following two discussion questions:
John's Institutional Review Board (IRB; the committee that reviews, approves and oversees all research involving human volunteers at John's institution) refuses to approve the study as designed. Their letter requires many modifications, but two pose a particular challenge to John's ability to acquire the data he wants. First, they state that the public registry is designed to protect the public not to facilitate an invasion of privacy. They propose that he recruit by advertising his study. Second, they insist that his consent form detail conditions under which he will, in fact, be required to breach confidentiality, e.g. if participants mention ongoing or planned abuse of children or the elderly.
- Do you agree with these requests from his IRB? Give reasons for your answer including relevant ethical principles to support your arguments.
- Is there a way that John can redesign his study to obtain honest data from a representative sample or are there some data that we simply should not acquire?
