In 2017, Alia Crum, Brad Turnwald, and Danielle Boles published a study in which they experimentally manipulated the labels used to describe vegetables (the independent variable) and measured the quantity of vegetables that people ate (the dependent variable). This was a true experimental design because they experimentally manipulated the independent variable by randomly assigning participants to conditions in which vegetables were described with either evocative and flavorful labels or neutrallabels. The results showed that participants ate more vegetables when they were described with evocative labels than when they were described with neutral labels.

After they completed the original study, the researchers conducted a larger study at university dining halls to extend their findings.
