Hydrogen is considered as a potential green fuel for the future. The central idea here is that hydrogen can be produced either from splitting water using renewable electricity (green hydrogen), or obtained from hydrocarbons such as natural-gas/oil while capturing and storing the CO2 that will be generated (blue hydrogen). One of the proposed uses for hydrogen is in transportation. However, one of the key bottlenecks is the low density of hydrogen. Note that in a vehicle, what is important is the volumetric energy density (MJ/m3 ) as compared to the gravimetric energy density (MJ/m3 ). In this problem we are interested in calculating the volumetric density of hydrogen and natural gas (methane). The heating value (energy released by combustion) of hydrogen, and methane are 120 MJ/kg and 50 MJ/kg, respectively. Calculate the volumetric energy density (MJ/m3 ) as a function of pressure (0 to 500 atm) for the two gases at 20 C . You can either use the generalized compressibility chart or the Peng-Robinson equation EOS. Calculate the values at for pressures of 0, 50, 100, 150, ..., 500 atm. You can use Excel or MATLAB/python code. Plot the volumetric energy density of the two gases as a function pressure on the same plot. What do you observe from your calculations? What do you see as the challenge in using hydrogen as a transportation fuel. Briefly mention what other ways are being studied to make hydrogen suitable for applications in transportation
