I am given raw data of two groups of students at a school, female and male. I am tasked with comparing their SOL scores against the state average for male SOL scores and female SOL scores. Therefore, I am performing two separate analyses, one for males at the school compares against the state average score of males taking the SOL, and another for females at the school comparing against the state average score of females taking the SOL. What statistical test would best be used to perform these two analyses? I was thinking of performing an independent T-test however I am unsure because the only info I given from the state SOL score is the average whereas for the school I am given the raw data. I can successfully calculate the StDev for the school data but I am missing the StDev of the state average score. Is there another test I can perform or is there a way to estimate the StDev of the state average? How would I perform this test. I am attempting to use this t-Test formula: t = (xbar1 - xbar2) / sqrt(s1^2 / n1 + s2^2 / n2). The text in bold is what I am missing. I am not wishing to compare male against female but instead compare each against the state average score. Any help would be much appreciated in understanding in what direction I should go. I have already made my null hypothesis and alternate. My null states that the scores will not differ from the state average and my alternate states that the female students will have a higher average score than the state average and the male students will also have a higher average score than the state average. I am unsure as to how to formulate my assumptions and confidence intervals though.
