If children with autism respond to animals and maintain a level of engagement they are otherwise unable to with adults, forms of animal therapies may positively support their social development.

To test this hypothesis, a randomized controlled trial will be conducted as this type of study reduces bias and provides a rigorous tool to investigate the cause-and-effect relationships between interventions and outcomes (Hariton & Locascio, 2018). A selected group of children with autism representing a diverse and large enough population will be selected with the participants then randomly assigned to one of two groups, those receiving animal therapy or the control group, those not exposed to any form of animal therapy over the course of a school year.
