"If the material is in a powder form, the powder needs to be ground up and then compacted into the desired shape before sintering. The hydroxyapatite is usually sintered between 950 and 1300 degrees Celsius. This further consolidates the material and bonds the crystals withing the structure together to increase its strength and density. It is at this point that the Ca/P ratio becomes important. Too high or too low and phases of other calcium phosphates or calcium oxide will form within the structure, affecting how the bone will react. Often the material is being used for scaffolding, in which case while the material itself should be densified, the structure of it should be highly porous. In this case, the powder is mixed into a slurry and put into a gel or polyurethane foam mold to create the desired network of pores. Alternatively, to create custom shapes for a specific implant, the powder can be mixed with a binding agent and then 3D printed through extrusion printing into the specific design. The printed design is then sintered and seeded with the patient's cells for implant. 3D printing for biomedical applications is what I really want to work with in my carrier, especially with tissue engineering."
