I have a survey result, but for the open end questions can you please read through the responses and help me to analyze the survey maybe by counting and making a short list of what percent and count of students prefer what? Survey Question:-
Please list any technologies Saint Mary's needs to improve accessibility.
Survey Responses:-
N/A |
The library site is hard to access in such that it is hard to find content. Compared to my other university, Saint Mary's is lacking very much. |
N/A |
Better communication about what software the university supplies and better access to inexpensive textbooks |
Inquisitive, connect |
Additional course softwares |
NA |
nothing comes to mind. |
Nothing I know of at the moment |
Again, don't think technologies are the problem at SMU, the teachers are. |
It's been pleasing to see we have access via the university to online libraries not previously mentioned in orientation. |
Providing licenses for softwares and computers that can support them. |
. |
Not all videos have subtitles, this is a must for all videos. It doesn't make sense to have to wait a few days to get subtitles to get added. |
high quality text to speech services |
Computers in the second floor |
More computers for public use |
More outlets for sure. |
Not having to pay for Pearson my lab |
I haven't found any personal issues with Smu's accessibility |
dimmable lights and automatic doors |
Degree works is not working properly. It's giving me the wrong credits in progress and requirement for degree, I visited the science advising who told me it was a problem in the degree works causing that glitch. |
I cannot think of any right now |

None that I can think of |
I'm not sure |
I would encourage someone to consider studying at Saint Mary's University because of their technological facilities |
Some computers need maintenance or be changed due to its low performance capacity, specifically the one proffesors use in the Atrium 216. It is an awful computer. |
Stop forcing students to use outlook/their smu email when smu is too cheap to buy a firewall to block phishing emails. It is not the students' fault that your systems are not strong enough and that your faculty are falling for these traps. Find a way to make things better for everyone not just profs. Every student I know hates this. None of us use this email and as someone with limited phone storage, I really don't need yet another app on my phone just because of this. |
I would say close captioning for online lectures. I am not hearing impaired, but I find that closed captions help me follow along when taking notes during online lectures. |
Provide important and commonly used website and page links on SMU website and renovate out-dated websites. |
Not yet. |
I think they are all good enough. |
Wifi, |
Above average. |
unsure what smu as a whole is doing but the fred smithers centre has helped a ton, i feel as if lots of students could benefit from some of the resources from the centre that have not registered. disabilities are stigmatised and students do not want to feel as if they need help during the average age they attend courses. all staff could probably be cooler about resource technologies in the class room. some profs refuse to record or share lectures due to the content and material, which i understand, however students are paying for this education and the tuition costs should be reflected in the necessary supports for their academic success. |
I have none to mention. |
Ok |
Wifi, in curtain places, appsanywhere, so that we do not have to buy additionally. |
good |
I like Apps anywhere, my other school did not have something like this. I also needed full zoom access and was granted it within a few days which was great. |
Cyber security /MFA / No paper process...everything to be digitized |
more outlets, making it mandatory for professors to allow accommodation items or software and to provide the things students with accessibility needs (slides, notes, recordings, transcripts). If the university has recorders, tablets, transcription, captioning, etc. devices available to borrow for free. Finding a way to make labratories accessible would be amazing as well, i've been in a first year chemlab and they are not accessible for wheelchair users or persons like me with joint issues that need chairs with backs, appropriate height tables and chairs, and adaptability to experiments. |
It would also be helpful to add more elevators/ramps to buildings. also keeping things like the science pedway and elevator open all the time. An elevator in burke is needed. |
More gender neutral wshrooms would be an asset to the university as well, but physical accessibilty is needed above all else. |
I don't deal much with accessability issues so I don't have alot to say on this. From what I've witnessed with others that do, SMU center (fred smithers?)that deals with this is fairly proactive when informed |
Printing - it's inconvenient to have to go to the library not sure if there's printing around Loyola Academic that would be convenient |

As I mentioned previously in the survey, I would like to see additional power outlets or charging stations if able to enhance the ability to keep our electronics charged and keep ourselves focused on the task at hand whether it be an assignment, project, paper, quiz, test, or simply just attending an online class. |

I had a 10 year old computer and couldn't use a program needed to code R for a Stat class. I had to buy a new computer. |
No real complaints, would be nice to have cheaper printing options though |
Improvement of Brightspace |
screen reader, accessible documents, providing notice of the technology available to students |
Nothing much |
Focus more on BrightSpace instead of additional 3rd party websites. |
Everything seems good and well-structured. |
Information on varying topics is not often easy to find and requires digging on SMU websites |

Meeting neurodivergent accessibility needs on recorded lectures (i.e. closed captions on all videos not relying on professors to add them) |
Make and enforce guidelines about accessible course materials, especially pdfs. Offer students a strong screen reader software that has OCR and works with Brightspace. Ensure that students have access to their lecture content after-the-fact (ie, recorded lectures or slides posted to Brightspace) or offer a streaming link (like zoom) to synchronously join in person lectures. |
Also, please stop putting thin, light grey text on white/off-white backgrounds. I don't have vision problems, and even I'm struggling to read the questions on this survey. |
Slowness of apps anywhere when using at home |
I do not know |
Make all the teachers use one program to teach. Do you know how many classes I've gone halfway through before I realized oh they put the lectures in this thing while the book is on this website and I need a third to submit assignments. 5 classes in one semester had me crying because each instructor used 2 different websites (one for book and another to turn in assignments). |

I don't even know if SMU offers students to loan devices such as laptops but I don't think so since I've never heard anyone use it or heard anything about it, that would be really beneficial |
