Problem 4. (25 points)

Memory performance declines with older age. Some hypothesize that memory performance declines the more physical symptoms that you report. A researcher tested 72 subjects on a recall test asking them to recall a list fifty words presented one at a time. The age of each subject was also noted. In addition, each participant completed a physical symptom questionnaire in which they reported how many physical symptoms that they suffer from. The larger the number the more physical symptoms they are reporting.A data set labeled problem 1 has 72 subjects with each subjects recall score(recall), age (age)and number of physical symptoms (numsym) noted. Conduct an analysis to properly test the effects of age and number of physical symptoms predicting recall.

Answer the following questions from the results.

  1. (2) Write out the final regression equation

Recall Score = -0.6390 + 0.7961 (Age) + 0.3830 (Numsym)

2. (2) What is the regression coefficient for Age and what does that number specifically tell you about your results?

The regression coefficient for Age = .796; it tells us that there is a 79.61% increase in the recall score due to the age.

  1. (2) What is the regression coefficient Number of Symptoms and what does that specifically tell you about your results

The regression coefficient of Number of Symptoms is = .383; and it tells us that there is a 38.3% increase in the recall score due to the number of symptoms.

4. (1) Write below what number indicates the error in prediction from your analysis.

The standard error indicates the error in the prediction.

5. (1) What percent of the variance in recalls is accounted for by the predictor variables (after correcting for inflation) _____77.32%___.

4. (1) What percent of the variance in recalls is uniquely accounted for by the number of symptoms scores? __77.96%___

5. (1) For each standard deviationchange in number of symptomsscore how much does recalls change and in what direction___

Positive direction; the slope for the variable number of symptoms is positive.

6.(1) For each change of one standard deviation in age how much does recalls change and in what direction___

Positive direction; the slope for variable age is positive.

7. (5) Is there a problem with collinearity in this analysis. Use the three components of collinearity I reviewed in class to make your case for or against.
