QUADRATICS FLYING FROGS "Flying Frogs" is a trajectory game where flying frogs spring towards lily pads. Will the frog hit the lily pad according to the path indicated in the table if the lily pad is at (0.2, 0.0)? LILY PAD LAUNCH PAD Diagram of the Flying Frogs In the following table "x" represents the horizontal distance in metres and "h(x)" represents the height of the flying frog in metres above the surface of the water. Table of Co-ordinates for the Flying Frog X 0.8 1.0 1.2 2.0 h(x) 0.472 0.5 0.472 -0.2 A) Graph the data from the table above, then: i) Label the point (2.0 , -0.2) as the launch pad. Plot and label the point (0.2 , 0.0) as the target lily pad (not necessarily a point on "the quadratic). B) Create an equation for the data using function notation to express your answer. C) i) Identify the input variable? ii) Identify the output variable? iii) Is h(x) a function? State your reasoning. iv) If the domain is restricted to 0.8 = x = 2.0, what is the range? D) i)What is the maximum height of the flying frog? Extrapolate from the given data set to find h(0.6) = ?, the height of the frog above the water at a horizontal position of 0.6m. At what horizontal positions "x" is the flying frog at zero height above the water? (What is "x" in h(x) = 0?) iv) Based on these results, does the flying frog hit or miss the lily pad? Explain. How is this parabola different than the basic quadratic h(x) = x2? (List the transformations) vi) Would you pay to play this game (why or why not)
