Discussion 2.2: Supportive and Psychodynamic Therapy
The most crucial part of psychotherapy is understanding the roles of the therapist and the client. The goal of the relational psychodynamic model of psychotherapy is to work jointly to understand what is going on between the therapist and the client and to seek relational significance in everything that happens in treatment, from reactions to interventions to client-therapist contact (Safran, 2008). During this form of therapy, the therapist is not just an observer but is involved in the relationship with the client. Intersubjectivity emerged in 1984 to facilitate this type of therapy. It represented a shift from traditional one-person to two-person psychology (Wheeler, 2022). The benefit of this therapy is that there can be emotional communication, and the setting can feel like a conversation, not an appointment.
This form of therapy is the form of therapy that I would adopt in my practice. Having a therapist, I understand the importance of the relational psychodynamic model. I changed therapist because I wanted to feel that my therapist was involved more and part of the conversation. So, dealing with people with mental health disorders, I will allow myself to be a participant and an observer. Along with listening to diagnose, I will listen to understand and connect with my client. I got into this profession because I have an empathic passion for people who suffer from mental health disorders. I will assist my client in walking through experiences and accepting the multiple facets of the self via increased awareness of traumatic states. The relational psychodynamic model is therapeutic and allows everyone to be involved.
