I need help responding to the following answer:
The article I found for this week's discussion is one that researches mental health in the elderly. In the study by Jeon et al. (2007), they were determined to research the correlation between gender differences and mental health in elderly Korean individuals. The study provided many resources and scholarly references in their introduction and background of the article. These references provided previous findings on mental health between genders, such as mental health being poorer in women due to the mental load of being the primary caregiver to children and maintaining the homes. However, other references in the article found mental health to be poor in men due to the stress of being primary breadwinners, historically, and worry of losing their jobs or retiring. Ultimately, this study found that elderly Korean women reported significantly more depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation than men. They also found that mental health was significantly lower in both male and females who reported living alone or within a multigenerational home, compared to those who lived alone with a spouse (Jeon et al., 2007).
One finding that I found interesting in this article, that may combat a myth, is that mental health was lower in elderly living with thier children or grandchildren (within a multigenerational home). I think many people, including myself, assume that living with more family would make an elderly person happier. However, this is not the case, and my thought is this may have to do with the limited freedom or independence after being independent for most of ones life.
