There is a significant connection between childhood trauma and adult mental health. Childhood trauma is also known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the medical world. Childhood trauma can be classified as physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse or neglect. There are many different types of things that can happen that may cause childhood trauma such as violence, bullying, traumatic grief or bereavement, abuse, and much more. Children may react to trauma differently, and depending on their support system and classification of trauma, they may need behavioral health therapy. Unresolved traumas can cause a lot of negative outcomes for adults, and some are a lot more serious than others.

Childhood trauma is also known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the medical and academic world. Childhood trauma refers explicitly to the trauma individuals face in their development as a child. The ACE study was one of the first and largest research efforts conducted to examine the impact of childhood trauma on health decades later. Abuse and neglect are particularly traumatic forms of childhood adversity, and can include physical, sexual, and emotional maltreatment. Research shows that children who experience trauma and dysfunction in their household often struggle to learn the same boundaries and behaviors that so many others seem to take for granted (Gillis, 2022). Gillis suggests that there are ten different ways that childhood trauma can manifest in adult relationships. These include fears of abandonment, getting irritable or easily annoyed with others, needing a lot of space or time to yourself, unequal financial and household responsibilities, settling and studying in a relationship much longer than its expiration date, constant arguing or fighting in relationships, or avoiding conflict at all costs, serial monogamy, worrying that you are settling, being fearful of committing, or avoiding relationships altogether, trying to change their partner. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris states that approximately 61% of adults have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). The CDC also asserts that 1 in 6 adults experienced four or more adverse childhood experiences (Adverse Childhood Experiences: The Hidden Public Health Crisis, n.d.).
