Design the Study
Explain the purpose of your study. We are trying to determine if the Baylor University study of the average time spent on your cell phone upholds at BYU-Idaho.

Identify the response variable(s). (Tip: carefully consider what you are going to observe and record) Determine whether the response variable numeric or categorical. (Lesson 2 Section 4.4) This study is an observational study. We are simply observing and recording without manipulating variables.
Identify the population. The students at BYU-Idaho
Identify the population parameter of interest. The mean of the total average time spent on phone each day.
State your Null and Alternative Hypothesis in words and symbols. H(0): (BYUI Students) = 8, H(A): (BYUI Students) 8, Null Hypothesis states that BYU-I Students have an average of 8 hours of screen time, while the Alternative Hypothesis says that they don't have an average of 8 hours.
State and Define your Planned Sampling Method. (Lesson 2 Section 4.3) Simple Random Sampling (SRS) - Where researchers randomly choose participants from a population. This is the best method for receiving a sample from a population.
How will you apply the planned sampling method? We will apply this by sending out emails of our survey to 300 random students at BYU-Idaho.
Explanation on why you chose this type of method. We chose this method because we felt that this would give us the best results of what the true average is. We are able to get a good amount of students reports that show a random variety without having every single student answer the questions on our survey.
Collect the Data
What did you learn in Data collection? The data collection was a learning process for us. We had to learn how to send all the emails out and we had to learn how to get responses.
Describe how sampling was completed. We sent out 300 emails to the students at BYU-Idaho to get our results.
Describe things you did not anticipate. We did not anticipate how difficult it would be to get a decent number of responses.
List the Sample Sizes Gathered by Group. We received responses from 47 students out of the 300 emails we sent out.
