Problem 4 (25 pts) Solar cells convert thermal energy, in the form of electromagnetic radiation, into electrical energy. The most efficient laboratory solar cell to date operates at about 47% efficiency. Assuming this is the steady- state efficiency of the solar cell (i.e. the state of the solar cell is not changing with time), answer the following questions. A. Draw a simple schematic of a solar cell. Make sure you identify the system under study and indicate any energy flows (e.g. heat transfer) on your schematic. B. Write down an equation that you could use to define the efficiency of the solar cell. C. If thermal energy from the sun reaches the earth's surface at a rate of 1000 W/m, what is the rate of thermal energy leaving the solar cell, per m of solar cell? D. Current global energy consumption is approximately 18 Terawatts. How many square kilometers of these high-efficiency solar cells would be needed to meet the world's energy demands, assuming the solar cells are constantly exposed to solar radiation? Is this an accurate estimate of the real solar cell area needed to meet these energy demands? E. Consider an electric vehicle powered by these high-efficiency solar cells. To maintain a constant 65 mph, the mechanical power draw (to overcome air drag and the rolling resistance between the tires and the road) of the car is approximately 15 kW. If the electric engine is 85% efficient, how many square meters of solar panels would need to be embedded in the car? Based on your answer, do you think we'll ever have cars that are directly powered by solar cells
