You and a few friends have joined the Seneca chess club. (You watched The Queen's Gambit and got hooked!)
The club is going to hold a chess tournament, on campus, for anyone who wants to play. The goal is to let students and staff know about the existence of the club and hopefully attract new members. You and your friends have volunteered to organize and run the tournament. No pressure, but the club has never run a tournament before and, while expectations are high, nobody really knows what to expect.
The club executive has agreed to fund the tournament, within reason, but no firm number has been approved... primarily because nobody really knows what expenses will be incurred! The schedule is still pretty vague but early April has been mentioned as a good time.
Truth be told, you're already regretting having volunteered to organize the tournament - you've never done one before either and you're not sure where to start. First step - you and your friends meet over a coffee to talk about the project and how it might work. You summarize what you know:
- It's a chess tournament for Seneca students and staff
- You don't know who will play but you're assuming some seasoned players and some rookies too
- The tournament will be located at Newnham campus - exact location is still to be determined
- The goal is to publicize the chess club and attract new members
- You do have access to some budget but no firm number has been approved
- It really is a tournament - winners, losers... some sort of structure is required
- Timing and budget are still to be determined but early April is a preliminary timing target and, conceptually, a budget is in-place, final numbers to be determined.
You have now finished your first coffee - logical next step is getting more, which you do... and now you're stumped... what is the next step? The club executive is looking for a plan at next weeks meeting. They know you and your friends won't have all the details in place but they are looking for a high level presentation about how the tournament might happen and what work will be required in order to make it happen
